French speaker maker Focal’s Utopia line of speakers is a no holds barred high-end expression of the company’s engineering philosophy. At this year’s High End show in Munich, which kicked off today, Focal has unveiled the Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo Speakers.
These new speakers build on the Utopia III introduced in 2008 and represent the sum of the experience of the company’s engineers as the speaker series has evolved. The press release notes the use of unique materials and technologies that are exclusive to the brand, here are a few examples:
Focal uses a TMD (tuned mass damping) suspension and NIC (neutral inductance circuit) technology in its midrange, which it says results in a linear frequency response between 1 kHz and 4 kHz that is practically free of distortion, with the goal being to create a midrange that sounds extremely neutral. The company says its focus on the midrange driver contributes to a precise stereo image.
Another feature of Focal focuses on is its Reinforced Acoustic Structure. The aesthetics of the Utopia line are instantly recognizable, but what you don’t see is what’s inside the speaker.`Machined reinforcement rings made of solid aluminum parts are placed between the speaker and speaker driver basket. According to Focal, this technique is used ” the form of rings for the 6″ and 11″ speaker drivers of the StellaUtopia EM Evo, and on the 6″ speaker drivers of the Grande Utopia EM Evo.”
Additionally, Focal brags that it conducted research into the magnetic circuit, the result being NIC. Improvements are claimed in reducing harmonic plus intermodulation distortion.
Wrapping up its list of improvements or enhancements, Focal notes that the new Utopias will be available in “automotive-inspired, less conventional” colors with a glossy finish. Options include Metallic Blue, Ash Grey and British Racing Green, as well as the timeless Black Lacquer and Carrara White.
These speakers do not come cheap. Each Grande Utopia EM Evo will retail for $120,000 while the per unit cost for the Stella Utopia EM Evo is $65,000. Anyone interested will be able to purchase Focal’s latest flagship speakers in September of 2018.
